Quando si usa il trapassato prossimo?

This tense describes an action that happens before another action in the past.

Venerdì ho ricevuto il libro che avevo ordinato giovedì. (On Friday I received the book that I had ordered on Thursday.)

• Alice aveva studiato bene e non ha avuto problemi all'esame.

  Alice had studied well and didn't have any problems in the exam.

• Giovedì avevamo dimenticato di prenotare il colloquio con il professore e quindi venerdì non abbiamo potuto parlare con lui.

  On Thursday we forgot to schedule a meeting with the professor, so on Friday we couldn't talk to him.

Forgetting to schedule the meeting happens before they can't talk to the professor.

• Quando sono arrivata in Italia avevo già studiato italiano per 6 mesi.

  When I arrived in Italy, I had already studied Italian for six months.

We use the trapassato prossimo to talk about an action that happened before another action in the past.

Non ho fatto l'esame	perché non avevo studiato.

• • Non sono andato in libreria con i miei amici perché avevo già comprato i libri.

    I didn't go to the bookstore with my friends because I had already bought the books.

  The first action in the past is "avevo comprato i libri".

• • Avevamo chiamato l'hotel per prenotare.

• Quando avevamo chiamato l'hotel per prenotare, ci avevano detto solo che per il cane ci sono 20 euro di supplemento.

  When we had called the hotel to book, we were only told that there was a 20 euro additional fee for the dog.
